Amongst the main touristic events in Madeira, like Carnival, the Flower Festival and the Wine Festival, the importance of Caneca Furada is essential.
Caneca Furada (meaning “Pierced Mug”) is more than a Samba School. It is an institution that is present in all the popular festivities and main events of the island since 1979. Founded by Angela Figueira and later led by Ferdinanda Sousa, Caneca Furada was attended by ladies of the high-society and celebrities from Madeira. They have won the Queen of Carnival prize several times and they were invited to the Carnival of Las Palmas, Canarias, for 5 years in a row. In 1983, they have been granted a diploma by the University of Samba in Brazil. Until today, Caneca Furada remains a relevant piece of the Carnival in Madeira.
This year, Pestana Hotel Group pays tribute to Caneca Furada with a flashback of its parades and outfits over 3 decades (1980-2000).
An exhibition not to miss for anyone in Madeira from February 28th to March 8th, 2019. You can share the history of Caneca Furada in Pestana Casino Park, Pestana Carlton Madeira, Pestana Village, Pestana Promenade e Pestana Grand – being themselves a luxury reference in the island. It’s a good reason to stroll around the streets of Funchal, from Estrada Monumental to Rua Imperatriz Dona Amélia.
